Man killed in Netanya car bombing

Police say vehicle belonged to known criminal, though he was not inside at time of blast

A man was killed in Netanya Wednesday afternoon when a car exploded in what police believe to be an underworld-linked assassination attempt.

No details were released about the identity of the victim.

A second man in the car managed to flee unharmed, eyewitnesses said.

A preliminary police investigation found that the man was killed after being trapped inside the burning car following the explosion.

Police said the car belonged to a known criminal, though he had not been inside at the time of the detonation, Ynet reported.

In recent years there has been an upsurge in violent attacks and assassinations between Israel’s organized crime gangs, prompting Israel to establish in 2008 the Lahav 443 police unit dedicated to combating organized crime.
