PA flag-waver booted from UK soccer game

Security removes Queen’s Park Rangers fan from match against Tottenham Hotspur after he unfurls Palestinian banner

A British soccer fan was kicked out of White Hart Lane Stadium in north London on Sunday after he waved a Palestinian flag during a match between Queen’s Park Rangers and Tottenham Hotspur.

The QPR fan unfurled the Palestinian national banner high up in the stands and waved it at Tottenham supporters, but security officials quickly closed in to remove him.

Tottenham Hotspur, known as Spurs, traditionally has a significant Jewish following due to the large Jewish community near its home stadium, where the game was played.

The fans of the club often refer to themselves as the “Yids” or “Yid Army.”

As security personnel and then a policeman struggled to escort the fan from his seat, the unimpressed Spurs fans vented their disapproval by chanting “wanker” — a British pejorative roughly equivalent to the American “jerk-off” — and “Yid Army.”

The fan was eventually removed from the stands and the Spurs went on to win the game 4-0.
