Palestinian man beaten, injured by soldiers during arrest
IDF opens investigation, says troops were attempting to detain him for an unspecified crime; settlers say he was throwing rocks
The IDF launched an investigation into why a Palestinian man was beaten and seriously injured by soldiers in the central West Bank on Sunday, an army spokesperson said.
According to the military, the troops were arresting the man for an unspecified crime in the village of Nabi Saleh, outside Ramallah.
During the arrest, “a confrontation erupted” between the soldiers and the Palestinian, the army said.
The IDF spokesperson said the troops themselves brought the Palestinian to the hospital.
Settlers reported that the Palestinian’s friends first brought him to the nearby Halamish settlement, from which he was taken to receive medical care. They said he suffered a head injury and was in moderate to serious condition.
The settlers said the injured man was part of a group of Palestinians that were engaged in rock throwing.
The injured Palestinian was eventually taken by the IDF to Tel Hashomer Hospital in Ramat Gan, outside Tel Aviv, for treatment.
The military said “everything that happened there” is being scrutinized, as it was not immediately clear on what suspicion the Palestinian was being detained, how he came to be injured and who exactly was involved.
“The whole incident is being investigated. The details are a bit complicated. The whole subject is being looked into,” an army spokesperson said.
