Palestinian policeman seriously injured in Gaza stabbing, ministry says
Guard at checkpoint in central part of Strip is attacked by assailant said to be an Islamic 'extremist'
A Palestinian policeman was seriously wounded after being stabbed, apparently by an Islamic extremist, on Monday, officials and media reports said.
The incident took place while the policeman was manning a checkpoint on Salah-a-Din Street in eastern Gaza, the Hamas-run Interior Ministry in Gaza said in a statement.
The assailant was injured during the incident and taken to a hospital, the ministry added.
Gaza media reports said the assailant was an “extremist,” likely referring to a radical Salafi, a group that has targeted Hamas personnel in the past.
In August, a member of the Islamic State group, which is a Salafi organization, carried out the first suicide bombing against Hamas forces in Gaza, killing a border guard.
Hamas, a terror group sworn to Israel’s destruction, has run Gaza for a decade but have been regularly criticized by more radical jihadist groups in the Strip.
