Palestinians in Gaza early Sunday morning fired a mortar shell at southern Israel.

The shell fell in an open area near the Gaza border fence in the Eshkol region in the western Negev.

There were no reports of casualties or damage.

The attack triggered Code Red sirens in the area, unlike some recent shells that failed to set off the alarm, apparently due to technical failure.

Recent weeks have seen an uptick in violence from the coastal enclave after over a year of relative quiet.
