Israeli tennis star defeats Polish qualifier in semis to advance toward sixth career title

Israeli Shahar Peer advanced to the finals of the Baku Cup Saturday with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Polish qualifier Magda Linette.

Peer, who beat Tadeja Majeric of Slovenia 6-0, 6-4 in the semi-finals on Friday, hasn’t won a tournament for almost four years.

The 149th-ranked Peer is looking for her sixth career title,

Peer will face seventh-seeded Elina Svitolina of Ukraine in Sunday’s final. Svitolina beat fourth-seeded Alexandra Cadantu 6-1, 6-4.

Peer, who held the highest ranking of any Israeli ever when she reached #11 in 2011, has been in a slump since, failing to earn a spot in any WTA singles finals.
