2 killed in UCLA shooting; campus on lockdown
University police chief says shooter could be among the dead; cops conducting search and rescue across the school
Two people were killed Wednesday when a shooter opened fire on a campus at the University of California, Los Angeles, police said. It was unclear if the shooter was still at large. The school, meanwhile, was placed on lockdown.
The identity of the two victims and whether or not they were students was unknown. UCLA police chief James Herren said it was possible that one of the two people killed might have been the shooter. But, he said, that was not confirmed.
The shooting took place in Boelter Hall, an engineering building, which is where the victims were found. The exact location could not be divulged.
Herren told reporters that police were conducting an active investigation and that a search was underway on campus to ensure that there were no further victims.
A campus-wide alert went out immediately to inform students of the situation and to remain indoors, while teams of officers conducted search and rescue missions as soon as they arrived on campus.
Report of the shooting originally came from a 911 call at around 9:55 a.m. The origin of the call was unknown at the time of the announcement. There are no other injuries that the police know of and they are doing their best to secure the engineering building and the area around it.
