Police find mother of baby abandoned in Jerusalem
30-year-old Palestinian woman left her two-day-old daughter after getting pregnant out of wedlock
A Palestinian woman accused of leaving her 2-day-old baby on a Jerusalem street with the umbilical cord still attached was found by police Wednesday, after a several-day hunt.
The woman, 30, had fled from her family after becoming pregnant out of wedlock and has continued to move from place to place in order to not be discovered, Ynet reported on Wednesday.
The woman has undergone a full interrogation by Israeli police and was to undergo a full medical examination. Baby Usa’ma was placed by Social Services in a temporary foster home.
The baby girl was found Saturday on Hanevi’im street in the capital, not far from the Old City’s Damascus Gate, with a note in Arabic reading: “This is my baby Usa’ma -– take care of her.”
The girl was discovered on the busy street, near the seam line between East and West Jerusalem, by a boy who was playing nearby. He alerted his parents, who immediately called the police.
The affair riveted the public for days as police conducted a search for the mother.
Police said Wednesday they would consult with the state attorney in the coming days to determine what course of action to take regarding mother and child, Ynet reported.
