Police officer lightly wounded in riots near Jerusalem
Masked youths throw stones, Molotov cocktails at Border Police and Israel Police officers
A police officer was lightly hurt Wednesday afternoon during clashes in the East Jerusalem neighborhood of Isawiyah when masked youths threw Molotov cocktails at Israel Police and Border Police forces.
The troops cleared the protesters using riot dispersal measures.
Located on the slopes of Mount Scopus and inside the Jerusalem municipal boundaries, Isawiyah is often a flashpoint for rioting among the Arab neighborhoods in and around Jerusalem.
The attack comes less than a month after suspected Jewish terrorists torched the home of the Palestinian Dawabsha family, in the village of Duma in the West Bank, killing the family’s father, Sa’ad, and his baby son, Ali. The mother of the family and another son, aged 4, are still hospitalized in Israel with severe burns.
Since the attack, there have been numerous Palestinian terror attacks as well as sporadic riots.
Israel’s Haaretz newspaper said Wednesday morning that Jerusalem municipality has agreed with the Israel Police to subsidize an extended school day for boys in East Jerusalem.
The plan was created after police noticed that many of the rioting youths are school boys acting out of boredom.
A Meretz councilor on the town council criticized the plan for catering only for boys, calling it misogynist.
