Police make progress in probe of stabbing attack on elderly women
Gag order imposed on details of investigation into Jerusalem assault that wounded 2, one of them a Holocaust survivor
Israel Police have reportedly seen a development in their investigation into last week’s stabbing attack in Jerusalem that wounded two elderly women, including a Holocaust survivor, according to the Hebrew media.
The Jerusalem Magistrate’s Court has imposed a gag order on details of the probe.
Last Tuesday, two women aged 82 and 86 were stabbed by a pair of masked assailants near the Armon Hanatziv promenade. The attackers fled in the direction of the adjacent East Jerusalem neighborhood of Jabel Mukaber.
The two victims were in a group of five elderly Israelis who were on a walk together. One of the two is a Holocaust survivor. They sustained moderate injuries in the attack, with stabs wounds to the upper body.
A police spokesperson at the time said two suspects were caught. The two were later released, however, and police said they were still hunting the assailants.
The attack occurred in a wooded area known as the Peace Forest below the Armon Hanatziv Tayelet, a southern Jerusalem promenade overlooking the city popular with joggers, walkers and tourists.
The area sits near the seam line between the capital’s eastern and western halves.
The incident fit the pattern of stabbing attacks that have wracked the capital since October.
A wave of Palestinian terrorism and violence since October has left 29 Israelis and four foreigners dead.
Some 200 Palestinians were killed in the same period, most of them as they carried out attacks against Israelis and the remainder in violent protests in the West Bank, according to the IDF.
