Rent in building owed by Kushner family is too high — lawsuit
Claims could grow to more than $1 million in rent overcharges if the company is found liable
NEW YORK — Residents of a Brooklyn building owned by Jared Kushner’s family’s real estate company are suing, saying they’re being charged too much rent in violation of state regulations.
The lawsuit in state Supreme Court in Brooklyn alleges that Kushner Cos. charges nine residents in the firm’s 48-unit apartment building at 89 Hicks Street in Brooklyn Heights much higher free-market rents instead of rent-stabilized ones. The suit seeks class action status for other residents.
Claims could grow to more than $1 million in rent overcharges if the company is found liable.
Kushner Cos. said Tuesday it was reviewing the lawsuit and had no comment.
Kushner Cos. has been on a buying spree in Brooklyn in recent years. The company and some partners bought a group of buildings from the Jehovah’s Witnesses in 2013 near the Brooklyn Bridge. Last year, it bought a parking lot that it hopes to use for a future building.
Kushner is President Donald Trump’s son-in-law and senior adviser.
