Sara Netanyahu to head delegation to Guatemala
PM's wife invited by first lady of South American nation; visit said to be first time she will head a diplomatic delegation
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s wife Sara will head a diplomatic delegation to Guatemala in the coming weeks, the Ynet news site reported Wednesday.
According to the report, this is the first time that Sara Netanyahu will head a delegation on behalf of the foreign ministry, although she accompanies her husband on almost all of his foreign trips.
Netanyahu was invited to Guatemala by Patricia Marroquín, the wife of President Jimmy Morales, to lay the cornerstone of a new neighborhood built for those left homeless by the eruption of the Volcan de Fuego, Spanish for “volcano of fire,” in June.
The neighborhood, known as “Jerusalem” was built on the initiative of Guatemala’s Jewish community, Ynet said, adding that Netanyahu is expected to announce further Israeli aid to Guatemala at the ceremony, specifically related to medical treatment for children and water purification.
Israel and Guatemala have very close ties, with the South American nation becoming the second to move its embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem earlier this year, just two days after the US.
At the ceremony Morales described Israel-Guatemala ties as a “love between brothers” that will last forever.
