Shas spiritual leader hospitalized

Rabbi Ovadia Yosef, the spiritual leader of the ultra-Orthodox Shas party, was lightly injured when he fainted and fell in his home on Sunday evening.

Yosef was rushed to Jerusalem’s Hadassah Ein Kerem Hospital where he remains in good condition, but under medical supervision.

It was unclear what caused him to lose consciousness.

The 92-year-old rabbi may have suffered a broken bone, Ynet reported. He was reportedly fully conscious but in pain.

It was the second time in the past year that Yosef has suffered a medical emergency. In January he was hospitalized for several days after suffering a minor stroke.

The Baghdad-born Yosef served as the Sephardic chief rabbi from 1973-1983. He is a noted authority on Jewish law, and his Shas party primarily represents Orthodox Jews of Middle Eastern descent.
