Two arrested at anti-migrant rally in Tel Aviv
Residents of city's southern neighborhoods protest against illegal migrants and foreign workers
Two activists were arrested for disrupting the peace during an anti-migrant rally in Tel Aviv on Sunday. The men tried to block traffic on a main city artery at a demonstration aimed at raising awareness to the difficulties faced by the veteran residents of the city’s poorest neighborhoods in fac of influx of migrants and foreign workers.
Dozens took to the streets, carrying signs and chanting anti-migrants slogans. The protesters accuse the government of not doing enough to curb the illegal immigration of African migrants across the Egyptian border and allowing them to settle in the already struggling southern city neighborhoods.
The protest was held a day after two firebombs were hurled at a residence in south Tel Aviv that is home to African migrants. No one was hurt in the attack, the second of its kind in the past two weeks.
On April 27, firebombs were thrown at four houses of migrants from Sudan and Eritrea in the Shapira neighborhood, as well as at a public park where some migrants sleep. No one was injured but structures were damaged. One of the apartments also was used as a day care center.
A 20-year-old resident of south Tel Aviv was arrested in connection with the April case.
