Two dead in car bombing at Turkish army outpost
One soldier, one civilian killed in attack in town of Cevizlik; at least 10 injured; Turkish media points finger at PKK
Turkey’s state-run Anadolu news agency says a vehicle laden with explosives has hit an army outpost in the southeastern province of Mardin, killing two people.
One soldier and a civilian were killed in the Saturday attack in the town of Cevizlik, according to Anadolu. The agency says ten people, including civilians, were injured and taken to hospitals. Private broadcaster NTV reports that 14 wounded.
The Turkish Daily Sabah reported that the attack was carried out by the Kurdistan Workers’ Party, or PKK.
According to the report, the assailants also exchanged fire with Turkish troops before escaping.
Turkey has been fighting Kurdish militants in its southeastern provinces after a cease-fire with the PKK collapsed last July.
The renewed conflict has claimed the lives of nearly 600 security personnel and more than 5,000 Kurdish militants, according to Anadolu. An unknown number of civilians have also been killed.
