Two dead in weekend drownings

25-year-old drowns in Kinneret and a 13-year-old drowns in southern pond

A 25-year-old woman drowned in the Sea of Galilee on Saturday and a 13-year-old drowned in a pond in Golda Park, south of Beersheba.

A couple from Rishon Lezion were vacationing on Dugit Beach on the Sea of Galilee (Lake Kinneret) on Saturday. They drifted 50m offshore on an inflatable mattress before it sank. A passing boat rescued the man, but couldn’t save the woman.

“After searching for an hour, the woman’s body was found at the bottom of the lake. She fell overboard and couldn’t swim. Her husband nearly drowned trying to save her; unfortunately it was too late for her,” local police chief Ilan Schwartz told Army Radio.

Earlier on Saturday, a family from Tel Sheva visited Golda Park south of Beersheba. The 13-year-old son and 11-year-old cousin entered a pond despite signs forbidding swimming, and the 13-year-old drowned.

The boy was pulled from the pond after seven minutes underwater. He was rushed to Soroka Hospital in Beersheba, where he arrived in serious condition, and was later pronounced dead.

Police opened an investigation into the incident.
