Two women hit in traffic while memorial sirens wail
Ashdod schoolteacher collapses and dies after Holocaust memorial ceremony
A woman was run over in Beersheba and another in Tel Aviv as they left their cars to stand and honor the victims of the Holocaust during the two minutes of silence Thursday morning.
The incident in Beersheba happened on Shaul Hamelech Street when the woman, in her sixties, was standing outside her vehicle to pay her respects.
Medics pulled the unconscious woman from beneath the vehicle that hit her and took her to Soroka Medical Center in serious condition and with multiple injuries.
On the outskirts of Tel Aviv, another woman, in her 40s, was hit as she stood next to her car on the highway. The woman was taken to Ichilov Hospital in moderate condition with head injuries.
Each year on Holocaust Remembrance Day a two-minute long air raid siren is sounded in memory of those killed in the Holocaust during which time many people stand to attention. Traffic comes to a halt and drivers often step out of their vehicles to stand in the road.
In a separate incident, a schoolteacher who was partaking in a Holocaust Remembrance memorial in Ashdod Thursday complained that she did not feel well during the event. After the ceremony was over, she collapsed and was rushed to a nearby hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
