UN envoy gives Iran ‘Best Actor’ Oscar

It must be difficult to be Ron Prosor, Israel’s ambassador to the UN.

Abba Eban, who held the post for a decade, famously said, “If Algeria introduced a resolution declaring that the earth was flat and that Israel had flattened it, it would pass by a vote of 164 to 13 with 26 abstentions.”

So during a speech Monday in which he encouraged the Security Council to reaffirm its commitment to the Charter of the United Nations, Prosor decided to introduce a little fun into his very serious work.

First he warned the countries present that “day by day extremism is spreading its ugly tentacles and in the process, destabilizing communities and nations. The threat is obvious and it is growing, and yet this Council has been reluctant to take decisive action.”

But then, a la the Academy Awards, Prosor decided to hold a mock award ceremony.

“If the Oscars for Maintenance of International Peace and Security were given at the UN, I would not be surprised if these candidates were awarded a prize,” Prosor began.

“In the Best Actor Category – for acting like a peace loving country while developing nuclear capabilities, denying the Holocaust, and threatening the destruction of another member state… the Oscar goes to Iran,” he said.

Hezbollah won Best Supporting Actor for its assistance to the Assad regime. Saudi Arabia scored Best Visual Effects for making women “vanish” from the public sphere. “No competition there,” Prosor added.

The Palestinian Authority also took home a prize, for Best Editing. “But the truth is…” Prosor said, setting up his zinger, “the Palestinian Authority already received enough prizes from this institution.”
