Sign depicts Trump with swastika-like imagery
Phoenix billboard's designer says it is supposed to represent 'power, money and dictatorship'
Residents of Phoenix, Arizona, expressed shock Saturday over a billboard depicting US President Donald Trump alongside mushroom clouds and dollar signs that resemble Nazi swastikas.
Jeff Whiteman told Reuters the sign was “pretty drastic. I thought swastikas were very crude and violent.”
Another local, Cassandra Faustro held back a chuckle, saying the billboard “really got my attention.”
The billboard’s designer, Karen Fiorito, explained that the idea for its establishment came from deep frustration with the current US administration.
“I think a lot of people and I don’t feel like our voices are being heard,” she told the agency.
“To me it says power, money and dictatorship,” Fiorito added.
Since the election of Trump, reports of swastika graffiti have seen a spike, with the symbol often seen together with praise for Trump or some of his campaign messaging.
Trump, meanwhile, has been accused of emboldening anti-Semitic elements by courting the white nationalism-infused alt-right movement.
