Woman arrested after her fetus dies in home birth

Police investigating possible negligence; mother claims child was stillborn

Police on Tuesday remanded for five days a woman whose baby was found dead after she gave birth at her home near Haifa.

Law enforcement authorities believe that the fetus died because of the woman’s negligence, while she claimed it was stillborn.

The court ordered an autopsy to determine the cause of death.

According to a 2008 paper published by the Knesset Committee on the Status of Women, hundreds of women choose to give birth at home every year.

The state allows home births but strongly discourages them by means of such disincentives as offering less financial support to mothers who have their babies at home than to those who deliver in the hospital or arrive there within 24 hours.
