Woman indicted for throwing unwanted son in well, killing him
Bedouin mother insists child born handicapped was not hers; body of 20-month-old was found by police in cistern near family home
A 34-year-old Israeli Bedouin woman was indicted Thursday on murder charges after police determined she threw her handicapped baby into a well in July to get rid of him.
According to the indictment, Rawaba Alkoran left her 20-month-old son to drown in a well because he was born with a congenital defect, Channel 10 reported.
Alkoran insisted that the boy, one of twins, was not her biological child because of his deformity.
Initially, she told authorities the toddler had wandered off by himself from the family home in the Bedouin town of Hura, northeast of Beersheba.
Large numbers of policemen were then deployed to search for the boy in the surrounding wilderness of the northern Negev desert, including various pits and cisterns in the area.
Later that day, police discovered his body in a well near the family home.
After the toddler’s body was found, police announced that his death would be investigated as a murder and detained Alkoran for questioning.
