Yachimovich: Labor only alternative to Netanyahu
Labor chief tells Army Radio Netanyahu is most capitalistic PM ever
The Labor Party is the only real alternative to Benjamin Netanyahu’s government, Labor chairwoman Shelly Yachimovich told Army Radio on Thursday.
“Netanyahu is not a monarch… he is an elected politician… and therefore we can’t give up on our ambition to replace the most capitalistic prime minister Israel has ever had,” Yachimovich said, making clear her ambition to be the next prime minister of Israel.
Under Yachimovich’s leadership, the Labor Party has made significant progress in public opinion polls. Labor holds 9 seats in the current Knesset, which has 120 members. A Maariv/Teleseker poll Thursday showed Labor winning 18 seats in the upcoming elections, a dramatic rise for the party.
Yachimovich credits her espousal of social justice with Labor’s recent success in the polls. She told the radio show: “The only real alternative to Netanyahu’s government is the Labor party… The vote in these elections will be ideological, and our the social-democratic way is the way the public will connect to it.”
Yachimovich, 51, has served in the Knesset for six years, after a long career as a television journalist and author.
