IDF spokesman to step down Monday
Yoav Mordechai to be succeeded by former head of Civil Administration in West Bank
IDF Spokesman Brig. Gen. Yoav Mordechai will step down from his post on Monday.
He will be replaced by Brig. Gen. Moti Almoz, 45, who headed the army’s Civil Administration and was in charge of day-to-day encounters between soldiers and Palestinians in the Israeli-controlled areas of the West Bank.
In 2011, Almoz sent out a controversial memorandum stating the IDF enforced laws against illegal building more strictly against Palestinians than settlers and calling for the cessation of the demolition of illegal Palestinian homes to create balance.
Since enlisting in 1985, Almoz climbed the ranks serving in Engineering Corps units.
Mordechai, who served as spokesman since April 2011, will be promoted to the rank of major general and head the unit of the Coordinator of Government Activities in the Territories (COGAT).
