Jerusalem’s annual marathon to run as usual, despite Hamas war
This year's race is a tribute to the IDF, security forces and rescue teams, says Mayor Moshe Lion
The Jerusalem Municipality announced that the annual marathon will take place on March 8 as planned, despite the war, and, as a tribute to the IDF, security forces and rescue teams.
“The strength of a society is measured by its ability to continue daily life in the face of challenges, alongside support for our dedicated soldiers fighting on the front lines,” said Jerusalem Mayor Moshe Lion in a statement. “We all hope that peace, security, and tranquility will return to our beloved country quickly. Am Yisrael Chai, and we will not stop running.”
Registration in the marathon is free for IDF soldiers, security forces and rescue teams, including reservists who served or are currently serving. Spouses and children of reservists who served or are serving will receive a 50% discount on marathon registration fees.
Registration is open in six categories, including the full 42.2-kilometer marathon (26.2 miles), the 21.1-kilometer half marathon (13.1 miles), the 10-kilometer (6.2 miles) run, the 5-kilometer (3.1 miles) run, the 1.7-kilometer (1.05 mile) family race, and the community race of 800 meters (875 yards).
Registered runners will receive a race kit that includes an official Saucony race shirt, a chest number, a one-time electronic measurement chip and coupons for promotions and benefits.
The marathon is sponsored by Toto Winner, Saucony, Aldan, the Pools Center, Cinema City and Riedman College, and is produced by Electra Target.
The entire event is organized by the Jerusalem Municipality, in collaboration with the Jerusalem Development Authority, with the support and assistance of the Jerusalem and Heritage Office, the Ministry of Culture and Sports and the Ministry of Tourism.
The marathon route includes Jerusalem landmarks such as the Israel Museum, the Supreme Court, the President’s Residence, the walls of the Old City, the Armenian Quarter, the Tower of David, the Khan Theater and the Sultan’s Pool.
