Birders in the southern Negev ring in their 100th species

The Great Spotted Cuckoo has been spotted, and ringed.

The Ramat HaNegev Birding Center recently tagged, or ringed, its 100th species for the greater Sde Boker region, a male Great Spotted Cuckoo.

The winter can be a great time to enjoy the Negev desert, but not when it rains, wrote Meidad Goren from the Ramat HaNegev Birding Center. It’s also more difficult to ring birds in the rain, according to Goren, as the cold weather freezes the birds’ nests. Last month was the wettest January so far, with at least four days of rain.
