The Great Eagle

2017 | 33 Minutes | Uri Rosenwaks | February 12-19, 2026

Delving into the world of Maimonides, the greatest Jewish adjudicator and philosopher, clarifies one thing: if he would suddenly awake and appear in the State of Israel today, he would most certainly be baffled.

Like every myth, and especially one created 800 years ago, everyone today has his own Maimonides, right wing or left wing, intellectuals or rabbis, whether orthodox, religious nationals, or secular.

What were his influences? In what language did he speak and think? What were the events that shaped his life? Above all, what remains of his perceptions among Jews, and current day Judaism?

The first episode of  ‘The Great Eagle’ will be available to watch through DocuNation. Access to the other two episodes will be provided to Times of Israel Community members upon request.

Episode 1: Follows Maimonides’ childhood in Cordoba, his escape to Morocco, the Jewish community’s forced conversion to Islam, and his arrival in the Land of Israel.

Episode 2: Depicts Maimonides’ life in Egypt, where he composed his monumental work, the Mishnah Torah.

Episode 3: Discusses the controversies of Maimonides’ philosophical book, The Guide for the Perplexed, and poses difficult questions for contemporary Judaism.

All of the funds earmarked for this project go directly to Israeli documentary filmmakers at this difficult time when they’re encountering global cultural boycotts.

For DocuNation, we’re collaborating with renowned documentary filmmaker Yonatan Nir, who hosts the discussions with the filmmakers.

How it works

Each film — with English subtitles — will be available to watch for seven days over a weekend. On that Sunday, you can join our live English webinar with the filmmaker. We will send out a reminder for each event.

‘The Great Eagle’ will be available to stream February 12-19, 2026. The live Q&A hosted by Yonatan Nir will take place on February 15 at 8 PM (Israel time) / 1 PM (Eastern Time) with director Uri Rosenwaks.
