An infant died at Jerusalem’s Hadassah Mount Scopus Hospital, the medical center announced Saturday, hours after the eight-day-old boy was rushed in for treatment following a circumcision.

The cause of death was not immediately clear, and police opened an investigation into the incident, according to Hebrew media reports.

The baby’s parents, residents of the Neveh Erez settlement in the northern West Bank, said the baby lost consciousness shortly after the circumcision, which was carried out on Friday afternoon, Channel 13 reported.

The hospital said that when the baby arrived he had no pulse and that paramedics had tried to resuscitate him. Doctors continued resuscitation efforts but later declared him dead.

The baby was sent for an autopsy to determine the cause of death, according to Hebrew media reports.
