2 police officers, civilian charged with smuggling Palestinians into Israel via Jerusalem-area checkpoint

Two Border Police officers and a civilian are charged with bringing Palestinians into Israel illegally through the al-Jib checkpoint north of Jerusalem, near the Givat Ze’ev settlement, the Department for Internal Police Investigations says.

The DIPI, a Justice Ministry agency for probing police, says the officers are accused of accepting cash, food and drinks to let in Palestinians without a permit, and the civilian is accused of paying bribes and smuggling in the Palestinians.

The smuggling incidents allegedly took place on a “large number of occasions” over the first half of 2024.

The officers also shared sensitive information about the checkpoint and its operations, according to the DIPI.

In addition, one of the officers is accused of deleting phone messages about the scheme “in order to thwart a legal proceeding,” and the other officer is accused of trying to coax colleagues into waiving security checks for Palestinians arriving from the West Bank without a permit, DIPI says.

The indictment filed at the Jerusalem District Court yesterday charges the officers with fraud and breach of trust, obstruction of justice, failure to fulfill their official duty and receiving bribes.

The civilian is charged with driving without a license and registration, unlawful transportation, and paying bribes.
