Border Police soldier suspended after video shows him throwing stun grenade into car in Qalandiya, blocking driver’s exit — report

A Border Police soldier has been suspended from duty after he was caught on camera throwing a stun grenade into a car in the Qalandiya refugee camp in the West Bank and preventing the occupant from leaving the vehicle, the Ynet news outlet reports.

The news outlet shares footage of the incident captured by nearby security cameras.

In the footage, the soldier can be seen approaching the parked vehicle while shouting at the people inside.

The verbal confrontation lasts for a few seconds before the soldier launches the stun grenade into the vehicle, and it goes off.

Two passengers who were in the back of the car immediately throw open the door and escape as smoke pours out of it, but the soldier blocks the door next to the driver, leaning on it to prevent him from exiting the vehicle.

He moves away after a moment to train his gun on the passengers who escaped the vehicle, and fires at them as they duck for cover behind the car with their arms raised.

The soldier walks away while cursing at the two men, who do not appear to have been injured. The driver was also unharmed despite being prevented from exiting the vehicle, Ynet reports.

The Israel Police tells the news outlet that it has opened an investigation into the incident, and that in the meantime, the border police soldier has been suspended from duty.

“The documentation shows a soldier who acted in a manner inconsistent with procedures,” the police say. “Accordingly, the incident has been transferred to the Department of Internal Police Investigations for examination.”
