“The fighting must stop. The fighting must stop immediately,” says UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres as he opens today’s emergency Security Council session on the escalation in Israel and Gaza.

He laments casualties to both sides and condemns Hamas rocket fire in addition to Israeli counterstrikes.
Guterres says he is “appalled” by the Israeli strike on a Gaza refugee camp yesterday that left a family of 10 dead and “greatly concerned” by the IDF strike on a tower in the enclave that housed media organizations. Israel says it also housed Hamas operatives.

The secretary general condemns the crackdown by Israeli security forces on Palestinian protesters in the West Bank and East Jerusalem where Palestinian families are facing looming eviction in the Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood.
