Internal probe into fatal shooting of city worker at checkpoint won’t include autopsy — report

The Department of Internal Police Investigations will not perform an autopsy on a Jerusalem municipal sanitation worker who was shot dead by security forces at a checkpoint last week, Channel 13 News reports.

The deceased man, 50-year-old Khalil a-Rishq, was shot twice in the legs and once in the groin Thursday night by a Border Police officer and private security guard at the Shuafat checkpoint.

The report, citing witnesses, claims the man was left to bleed out at the checkpoint for an “extended period of time” before receiving medical assistance.

DIPI, a Justice Ministry unit that probes police officers on criminal suspicions, told The Times of Israel that it was probing the lethal incident. However, the reported decision to forgo an autopsy would seriously hamper investigators’ ability to confirm police claims that the officer and security guard shot Rishq while he was moving toward them.

Police said that officers shot at Rishq after he approached a checkpoint meant for vehicles on foot and refused to heed their calls to halt.
