Lebanon’s Aoun tells Rubio ceasefire with Israel ‘essential’ for advancing talks
Add ToI as a Preferred Source on GoogleBEIRUT, Lebanon — Lebanese President Joseph Aoun tells US Secretary of State Marco Rubio that a ceasefire with Israel was crucial, as Israeli and Lebanese military delegations meet at the Pentagon.
A statement from Aoun’s office says that during a phone call, the president “emphasized the need to exert all efforts to reach a ceasefire, considering it an essential gateway to moving on to any other step.”
A ceasefire reached in April has almost completely eroded after repeated attacks by Hezbollah on troops operating in southern Lebanon and at northern border communities, prompting Israel to advance its forces across the Litani River.
