Qatari negotiators are in Iran to meet Iranian officials in an effort to de-escalate tensions and create conditions for broader negotiations to continue, a source with knowledge of the situation tells Reuters, adding that the talks are being conducted in coordination with the United States.
The talks aim to address the implementation of the US-Iran memorandum of understanding and the issues that triggered the recent escalation between Washington and Tehran, including disputes over navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, the source says.
Earlier reports by Axios and The New York Times say officials from mediating countries have spoken multiple times to both American and Iranian officials, trying to stem the flare-up between the countries that is jeopardizing their agreement.
The reported effort by Qatari, Pakistani, Turkish, Egyptian and Saudi officials comes as US and Iranian leaders accuse each other of violating the deal, and as hostilities have somewhat subsided since yesterday.
