Two Israeli men in their 20s were arrested early this morning on suspicion of stealing cash from a Palestinian driver three weeks ago, on June 25, Israel Police says.
The Palestinian, Abd al-Rahman Shaheen, a resident of the city of Salfit, told The Times of Israel that while driving in the Salfit area, in Wadi Sha’ar in Area A, after visiting a friend who lives there, two settlers approached his vehicle and took cash from his wallet, which was inside the car — 500 Jordanian dinars, $300, and NIS 250 (about NIS 2,400, or roughly $780, in total).
Footage from Shaheen’s dashboard camera shows two people exiting a vehicle with Israeli (yellow) license plates, chasing him, stopping next to his car, and then driving away.
Shaheen filed a complaint with the Palestinian police. About two weeks ago, he said, the Israel Police contacted him and asked him to come to the Ariel police station to file a complaint there and hand over the dashboard camera footage. A week ago, Shaheen said he attended an identification lineup at the police station and identified one of the men who had stolen the money from him.
According to police, detectives took part in the investigation, assisted by forces from the Judea and Samaria District, Border Police troops operating in the West Bank, and other security forces. The two suspects were taken in for questioning and are expected to be brought before a court later today for a hearing on extending their detention.
