A Palestinian security prisoner stabbed and lightly injured a guard in the Hamas wing of the Negev desert Nafkah Prison on Monday, the Israel Prisons Service said.
The IPS said that the officer was being treated at the prison’s clinic, adding that “the wing is under control.”
A photo of the weapon shared by the IPS appeared to show a small kitchen utensil with one end broken to create a sharp edge.
The Palestinian Prisoner’s Media Office, a group that represents Palestinian prisoners in Israeli prisons, said in a subsequent statement that “the hero who committed the stabbing was a prisoner from Gaza,” and claimed the attack was a response to a recent assault on inmates by Israeli prison guards.
“Israel bears full responsibility for any deterioration in the situation,” the group says.
