A suspected armed robber was shot in Jerusalem on Tuesday after being mistaken for a terrorist.

According to police, residents in the capital’s Gilo neighborhood called for help when they saw the knife-wielding man near a national lottery booth.

An armed local shot the man in response, moderately wounding him. He was evacuated to the hospital for treatment.

Police arrived shortly after and launched an investigation.

Tuesday’s incident came amid heightened tensions, against a backdrop of terror attacks in Israel and the West Bank that have left 19 dead since March 22.
