A 16-year-old girl drowned Friday night at an Ashdod beach. Rescue crews attempted to revive her after pulling her out of the sea, but were forced to announce her death.

Another youth, aged 19, was found dead late Saturday morning following a lengthy search for his body. He had drifted away from the shore overnight Friday. A helicopter was deployed to assist the search.

Two other youths who had drifted out to sea managed to make it back to the shore and called for help. They tried to help their friends, but swam back to the shore so that they wouldn’t drown themselves. The two were taken to the hospital for treatment.

The four apparently went for a late night swim during a beach party and were overpowered by the strong undertow. Several dozen youths aged 15-21 were also present at the scene, though they did not enter the water.
