An 83-year-old man drowned while swimming in the Dead Sea on Saturday. Medics who were called to the scene attempted to resuscitate him but were unsuccessful.

While the salt-filled water is extraordinary buoyant, and it is hard to slip below the surface, it can also be treacherous: It can be hard to turn over in the Dead Sea water, hard to get one’s feet to the bottom, and a few gulps of the water can be extremely dangerous.

Meanwhile, two other people nearly drowned Saturday in two incidents in the Mediterranean Sea.

In Ashkelon a man in his 30s was rushed to the city’s Barzilai Medical Center after nearly drowning at a city beach.

A 62-year-old man nearly drowned at Palmahim beach, south of Tel Aviv. Medics managed to bring back the man’s pulse and evacuated him to hospital.
