Blossoming with Jewish pride
Actress Mayim Bialik is interviewed as part of an ongoing series focusing on inspirational Jewish figures in the US today
Deputy Editor Amanda Borschel-Dan is the host of The Times of Israel's Daily Briefing, What Matters Now and The Reel Schmooze podcasts, and heads up The Times of Israel's features.
Mayim Bialik, currently starring as Amy Farrah Fowler in the “Big Bang Theory,” broke into Hollywood with the 1989 film “Beaches,” in which she portrayed Bette Midler’s character as a younger woman. Later, from 1990 to 1994, she starred as the title character in the popular sitcom “Blossom.”
Not “just” an actress, Bialik has earned a PhD in neuroscience and is a devoted mom to two young children. She is also a committed Modern Orthodox Jew and the spokesperson for the Holistic Moms Network.
In the video seen here made by JewishPrideFilms, Bialik discusses working as an Orthodox woman in Hollywood, where modesty is not exactly on anyone’s agenda. She describes her most prideful Jewish experience (hint: it was in Israel) and talks about her favorite Jewish holy day.
