A man was reported killed and three others were injured Monday in an explosion in the northern Gaza Strip, Palestinian media reported.
The Hamas-run Gaza health ministry identified the man killed in Beit Lahiya as 55-year-old Mohammed Nimr Maqadmah.
Chanel 10 news, citing Gaza media outlets, said Maqadmah was a member of the Hamas terror group’s military wing. One of those injured was said to be a child.
The cause of the explosion was not immediately known. Terror operatives have in the past been killed while handling explosives.
On Sunday a Hamas member was killed in a tunnel collapse in Gaza. Reports in Palestinian media identified Thaer Nayef al-Zaraie as a member of Hamas’s military wing, the Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades. It was not immediately clear if the tunnel was an attack tunnel crossing the border into Israel or part of the warren of defensive fortifications Hamas has built under the Strip.
Several members of Hamas have been killed or injured in accidental blasts and tunnel collapses in recent years. In 2017, Hamas said 22 members of its armed wing were killed in tunnel-related accidents.
Earlier this month, Israel announced that it had destroyed the “longest and deepest” underground passage leading into Israel from Gaza that it had discovered so far.
