At least five Knesset coalition members have announced they will not support the current draft of the government’s controversial bill regulating ultra-Orthodox conscription, Kan news reports.
The report follows a coalition review of whether the draft, set to be submitted tomorrow to the Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee, would have a majority in the plenum.
Meanwhile, Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich is reportedly demanding a role in drafting the law and has not yet committed to supporting it.
According to Kan, discussions in the committee are expected to resume next week, with a series of deliberations planned over the coming weeks.
Last night, the broadcaster reported that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu gave the green light to advance the law. Shas chairman Aryeh Deri reportedly said that Netanyahu agreed to rabbinic demands for changes to the bill, a likely reference to either reducing sanctions on draft evaders or lowering enlistment goals.
