Herzog ahead of hearing on AG’s potential firing: Situation ‘like a rollercoaster that’s lost its brakes’

President Isaac Herzog issues a fierce warning against the ongoing proceedings weighing the potential firing of Attorney General Gali Baharav-Miara today, denouncing the process as “utter chaos” and demanding “responsibility” from the government.

In a video address released by his office, Herzog likens the situation to “a rollercoaster that’s lost its brakes,” saying the country is being driven by “utter chaos.”

“Everyone is attacking everyone. Everyone is blaming everyone. Everyone is striking out at everyone,” he says, describing what he calls an increasingly perilous atmosphere. “It’s a very dangerous situation… it’s incredibly dangerous.”

The president defends Baharav-Miara, praising her actions during the war against Hamas in Gaza and saying her decisions helped protect Israel against international criticism.

“I saw Gali Baharav-Miara in wartime. She made very courageous decisions, gave full backing to the government, the cabinet, the army, and the security services, with courage and integrity,” Herzog says. “That helped protect us even on the international stage.”

“I believe the role of attorney general is so sensitive in a democracy that every step must be measured and considered a thousand times before being taken,” he says.

Herzog also speaks out against attacks on public servants, noting that many civil servants “even support the coalition, as is fitting in any democracy.”

“And I say to everyone: we must stop. Stop before we collapse under the avalanche, truly. It’s that dangerous.”

“It’s legitimate to criticize,” Herzog adds, saying “there’s harsh criticism, and that’s understandable given the nature of the role, but it must be done responsibly.”

“That’s what I call for,” the president repeats, “responsibility.”
