Hundreds of demonstrators rally in support of Attorney General Gali Baharav-Miara near her home in Tel Aviv tonight, ahead of a long-awaited Supreme Court hearing on her dismissal.
The government voted in August to fire the top legal official, following a string of confrontations between her and coalition members. However, the Supreme Court froze the move until it could rule on its legality.
Ahead of Monday’s hearing, when the court will hear petitions against Baharav-Miara’s dismissal, protesters gather outside her residence with signs decrying Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his coalition.
Among the demonstration attendees are former IDF chief Moshe Ya’alon and Democrats MK Naama Lazimi. Protest organizers claim that Baharav-Miara is the last check on the government’s power.
“Masked men are sitting in the High Court and threatening the judges, the police are turning into Ben Gvir’s private militia, crime is running rampant in Israel, [as is] Jewish terror in the West Bank, and the government is advancing a draft evaders law that will dismantle the people’s army,” says an organizer, quoted by Ynet. “If the attorney general is dismissed, there will be no brakes to stop the [government’s] criminal rampage.”
At the request of journalists, Monday’s hearing will be broadcast live from the Supreme Court.
