Hundreds join in the funeral procession for Muhammad Hussein Tarabin, a 36-year-old Bedouin man who was shot and killed by a police officer in his home over the weekend.
Residents of Tarabin al-Sana and surrounding Bedouin towns join in the procession after praying in a mosque near the village’s entrance.
Black-clad mourners chant “God is great,” and the shahada, the Islamic declaration of faith, as they walk to the cemetery.
Tarabin was shot in the chest by a police officer overnight Saturday-Sunday, during a house search, part of a controversial police crackdown on the town that has lasted a week.
Habis al-Atouneh, the mayor of Hura, a nearby Bedouin town, says that it is a “dark day for the Negev, and a dark day in the history of the Israeli police force.”
He decries far-right National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir, who oversees the police, and blames him for the lethal shooting, but calls on mourners to obey the law.
Bedouin leaders have called a protest for Sunday against the police’s crackdown in the south, which has been going on for a month, in which officers have infuriated residents by placing ad hoc checkpoints at the entrances to several Bedouin towns.
