Irish foreign minister says Herzog Park should keep its name, urges Dublin council to vote against change
Irish Foreign Minister Helen McEntee criticizes the Dublin City Council over a vote it is due to hold on Monday on a proposal to rename the city’s Herzog Park, named after Israel’s former chief rabbi, Irish-born Chaim Herzog.
McEntee urges council members to vote against the proposal, saying that Herzog was an important figure in Irish history and has nothing to do with the issues Ireland has been “rightly” critical of — namely, Israel’s treatment of Palestinians in Gaza and the West Bank.
“Renaming a Dublin park in this way — to remove the name of an Irish Jewish man — has nothing to do with this and has no place in our inclusive republic,” she says.
“In my view, this name change should not proceed and I urge Dublin City Councillors to vote against it.”
