Jordan reopens Allenby Crossing to travelers but not cargo

Jordan says it has partially reopened its border crossing with the West Bank, three days after closing it following an attack that killed two Israeli soldiers.

“The crossing reopened Sunday for travelers only, while the movement of cargo trucks remains suspended until further notice,” an official statement says.

State broadcaster Al-Mamlaka reports heavy traffic at the Allenby Crossing in both directions from early in the morning.

On Thursday, a Jordanian truck driver carrying aid bound for Gaza opened fire at the crossing, killing an Israeli soldier and a reserve officer with the civil administration before being himself shot to death.

Following the attack, the Israeli military asked Jordan and the leadership in Jerusalem to suspend the transfer of aid through the terminal.

Allenby is primarily used by Palestinians in the West Bank to travel abroad without passing through Israel.
