There are scuffles outside the Justice Ministry as dozens gather in protest of the hearing on the potential dismissal of Attorney General Gali Baharav-Miara, with demonstrators decrying the coalition’s efforts to sack the top legal official.
Some demonstrators try to block the ministry’s exits and entrances after others were forcibly removed by Border Police from inside the building following an attempt to barricade themselves inside.
One protester has been detained so far, according to a group of lawyers that represents detained anti-government demonstrators.
Some of the protesters wear masks in the likenesses of far-right government ministers Itamar Ben Gvir and Bezalel Smotrich, both of whom sit on the five-member ministerial committee tasked with recommending to the government whether or not to fire Baharav-Miara.
The committee is currently holding a hearing on Baharav-Miara’s dismissal, which the attorney general herself declined to attend.
Earlier today, Baharav-Miara issued a statement describing the procedure as a “sham hearing” and warned it would deal a severe blow to the rule of law and to Israeli democracy.
