Party on Rothschild, where state began

Just an ordinary Friday afternoon in Tel Aviv, right where Ben-Gurion declared statehood

What do young Tel Avivians get up to on a Friday afternoon?

This amateur video captures a February 3 street party on Rothschild Street.

A few weeks ago, there were tents here — Israelis protesting about the high cost of housing, sleeping out to draw attention to social and economic inequalities.

Now, right next to Independence Hall, where David Ben-Gurion declared the revival of the historic state of Israel in 1948, the locals are dancing in the streets.

The DJ, briefly sighted in green, is Tomer Yosef, lead vocalist of the weird and wonderful Israeli group Balkan Beat Box. Other members put in an appearance too.

The party spread over several blocks; the music was pounding; a certain amount of beer was consumed. And then, gradually, street life gave way to a quietening down ahead of Shabbat.
