Shimon Peres successfully underwent surgery on Friday for a hernia at the Sheba Medical Center at Tel Hashomer.

The president thanked his well-wishers after awakening following the operation.

The 88-year-old president’s ailment was discovered during his state visit to Canada this week. The President’s Office said that the operation is simple, does not present a risk to his life, and that the president was “feeling fine” before going in.

The president is expected to be released from the hospital on Sunday and return to his duties.
