Meir Dagan, the former Mossad chief and current head of the port authority, can now add another title to his curriculum vitae: uranium prospector.

It was announced on Tuesday that Gulliver Energy Ltd, a publicly traded company that in 2011 appointed Dagan as chairman, will begin to search for uranium in a nearly 1,200-acre area between the southern town of Arad and the Dead Sea.

This is the first time a company has been given governmental permission to search for the radioactive material in Israel. The permit, first announced in December 2011, has a one-year duration starting April 1, 2012, and allows only the taking of samples for testing, not extraction.

Samples taken during oil exploration in the area have revealed high levels of radioactivity, indicating that uranium could be found there.

After the announcement, Gulliver Energy’s stock rose seven percent during morning trading.
